Oscar van Wijk shows his potential in scorching hot Dutch U23 Nationals
DESTIL-Parkhotel Valkenburg CT rides an aggressive race and takes third
Nispen was the location for the start of the Dutch U23 national championship and the riders had to cover over 160 kilometres. The start took place under a burning sun and strong winds. The riders of DESTIL-Parkhotel rode an attacking race and finished the race of with a very strong third place by Oscar van Wijk. The race consisted of a start in Nispen and a 50 kilometre loop around West-Brabant that lead the riders into 10 local laps of 11 kilometres in Hoogerheide.
After the race had started a lead group of 5 riders formed and Lars Oreel was part of it. Strong winds broke the peloton a few times. The race entered the local laps with a 5 men breakaway including Lars Oreel, a chasing group with Jordi van Loon and the compact bunch. During the following laps the situation did not really change, the five leaders maintained their lead and the chasing group with Jordi van Loon got caught. There were only two man strong enough to close the gap to the leading group and it swell to seven riders.
With around five laps to go the seven leaders got re-joined by the main bunch and their breakaway was over. This meant that there was still everything to play for and two riders went for it. Quickly after this they got company of around 13 other riders including Timo de Jong and Oscar van Wijk. With three laps to go a group of five got away, Nils Sinschek of WV De Jonge Renner, Dylan Boumans of Metec-TKH, Daan Hoole and Marten Kooistra of SEG Racing and our very own Oscar van Wijk.
With two laps to go Julius van den Berg caught up with the leaders and Daan Hoole got dropped. Julius van den Berg attacked and went on to take the win. Behind van den Berg Marten Kooistra played the team card and didn’t do any work, he attacked in the final lap to take a second place. But there was still a third podium spot up for grabs. Oscar who rode a very attacking race showed his stamina and won the third place in a nail-biting sprint-a-deux.
Altogether a very exciting championship with a deserved winner and a magnificent podium spot for Oscar van Wijk and DESTIL-Parkhotel Valkenburg CT.
