Van Trijp sprints to third place in Rabobank Dorpenomloop Rucphen

Breakaway stays ahead of peloton

The 42nd Rabobank Dorpenomloop Ruchpen took place in beautiful weather conditions and saw defending champion Maarten van Trijp take third. The 180 kilometres long race was the first in the brand new Holland Cup. Dane Mikkel Bjerg (Hagens Hagens Berman Axeon) took the win after a daylong breakaway. Belgian Rune Herreggodts (Lotto-Soudal U23) took second place. Defending champion of Team DESTIL-Parkhotel Valkenburg, Maarten van Trijp impressed by winning the sprint for third place after a great lead-out by Twan Brusselman.

Early on in the race there where many little breakaways including the DESTIL-Parkhotel Valkenburg CT riders. None of these were successful. Shortly after this there was a breakaway that did manage to stay away. Two riders got clear from the pack and took a 1,5 minute advantage. But the peloton was riding at a very high pace and caught the leaders. The young Dane Mikkel Bjerg attacked and got clear of the bunch with Belgian David Boucher(Tarteletto-Isorex). When the gap to the escapees was brought back to 30 seconds Runne Herregodts bridged across. Soon after the pace got too high for Boucher who had to let his comrades go.

In the nervous peloton there where many crashes including our guys. In fact only Maarten van Trijp did not hit the deck. The DESTIL-Parkhotel Valkenburg CT riders took there responsibility and tried to split the bunch several times, but it was all in vain. It was impossible for the young squad of Frank Pennings to do all the work by themselves. The leaders managed to stay clear of the chasing bunch where the work rate was low. The DESTIL-Parkhotel Valkenburg CT riders took matters into their own hands and rode very attentive today. During the finale they played the Van Trijp card. The winner of the Craft Ster van Zwolle is in great shape. Due to great work from Twan Brusselman and the rest of the squad Maarten eventually managed to win the sprint for third place. Twan Brusselman finished the race in tenth place after a great lead-out.

Altogether a great day for the DESTIL Parkhotel-Valkenburg Cycling team. Sports Director Frank Pennings looks back quite fondly. ”I’m proud of my team. Their unity and the way of racing is splendid. The riders look back happily and are satisfied with their race. In spite of the crashes it was a great day for our DESTIL Parkhotel-Valkenburg Cycling Team.”
